A beautiful place all year with highly defined seasons and quiet and tranquil out of the ski season when the crowds have gone home, and then suddenly once again each winter the mountains of the Three Valleys come alive with people enjoying this vast ski area... The largest linked skiing in the world. The Three Valleys ski domain provides more than 600km of runs and probably the same again off-piste. In fact it should now be called the Four Valleys with the link into Orelle (Maurienne Valley) which can be accessed by ski from Val Thorens. This has also opened up some extraordinary off-piste runs. The Three Valleys provides direct links between the ski resorts of St Martin de Belleville, Les Menuires, Val Thorens, Méribel, Mottaret, La Tania, Brides les Bains and the four Courchevel resorts, la Praz, 1550, 1650 and the world famous 1850 - and now Orelle, in the fourth valley - all under one ski pass offering on-piste skiing from 1300m all the way up to 3200m. As these figures show the Three Valleys ski area offers huge altitude differences favouring long run skiing. It has an ultra efficient, state of the art ski lift system, quality piste preparation and a dense artificial snow making system (1920 snow cannons) complementing the excellent natural snow cover. However, if you are not a fan of downhill skiing or like some variety during your stay then you can also roam the domain at your leisure on foot, hiking along the marked trails, or using the pedestrian ski lift passes. Many trails have been created especially to enjoy the increasingly popular snowshoeing sport and to discover the valleys from a new perspective: flora, wildlife, monuments, and spectacular scenery. There are also many cross-country skiing tracks that are prepared and maintained each day. These allow you to take in the breathtaking scenery and provide the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the mountains away from the pistes. An interesting and wonderful area all year round, there is much more here than the snow sports.
123 properties in Three ValleysSophisticated, chic and expensive. The highest and most famous of the Courchevel resorts was founded from scratch in 1946 and was the first purpose built ski resort. Since the beginning 1850 has long been the preferred ski destination of the rich and famous French who, over the years, have been joined by growing numbers of wealthy visitors from Britain, Russia and more recently the glamour of Bollywood and the new money of China. It has a huge capacity to entertain its visitors both on and off the snow, with its vast array of restaurants providing sushi to French gourmet. It boasts a 2* Michelin restaurant, plus many other highly rated establishments to suit both traditional and modern tastes. In addition it has a good selection of night clubs and bars. If you fancy dancing to dawn try Les Caves ..... I’m sure I spotted Austin Powers in there ........ Shopping is plentiful and there are many well known expensive brands on offer - this is a resort of fur coats and diamonds. It is also a good place for non-skiers with many other pastimes on hand including a huge ice rink which also hosts shows and ice hockey and a bowling centre. There is also snow shoeing, ice climbing, snow karting, plane and helicopter rides alongside many cultural events and art shows. 1850 also delivers quality accommodation with a higher proportion of luxury lodgings than most resorts. Most of its clientele still prefer 4* luxury hotels although the popularity of the luxury chalet market is steadily growing. It’s hard to rival 1850 for its classy comfort and outstanding cuisine – and certainly hard to rival for cost! At the top of the resort is the helicopter base and Altiport where a well subscribed aero club is active throughout the summer and winter. In summer 1850 opens its 18 hole golf course which is situated at the foot of the Saulire peak. The superb view of the lake from hole number 1 stretches out before you, and the club runs golf and gourmet weekends along with the neighbouring golf course in Meribel. The tourist office and proprietors work hard, summer and winter, to add value for the holiday goer with nightly entertainment, special events (from art and culture, to extreme ski competitions, to vodka evenings). Overall 1850 has put in considerable effort to earn and keep its reputation and whilst it has stunning snow quality and perfectly groomed pistes it is still best known for its après ski. But don’t be fooled, this is a resort that offers some extreme ski experiences right alongside the beautifully manicured pistes ideal for beginners and those less confident. The ski guiding service flourishes as the rich and famous seek their thrills. The off-piste in the Three Valleys is exceptional and you can also take a helicopter to Italy for even more amazing ski experiences. Here, there is something for everyone.
